Some love stories start with a grand plan, but for this couple, it all began with a chance meeting at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo. When Travis spotted Avery at the Backstage Club, he had no idea it would lead to a lifetime together. After a few months of persistence—and Avery playing a little hard to get—he finally won her over, and they’ve been inseparable ever since. When it came time to propose, he knew it had to be unforgettable, pulling off the ultimate surprise with the help of family, friends, and one perfectly planned decoy. Below, Travis shares with us how he made it all happen.

The Love Story

I had just moved to Ft Worth a few months prior as I had just been hired by John Zimmerman to join his team at Compass Real Estate. Towards the end of the FWSSR a friend of mine and I decided we should go up to the Backstage Club and catch one more round of the rodeo at Will Rogers before it officially moved to Dickies arena for good the following year. Avery was up at the Backstage Club with her mom and a few other friends. Lucky for me a mutual friend made the connection for me and from there. After she played “hard to get” for a few months I finally nailed her down as my girlfriend, turned wife and we have basically been inseparable since that night we met at the rodeo.

The Proposal

After finding the perfect ring, I knew it was time to plan the perfect engagement party. With the help of many family and friends we were able to pull off the surprise. It was a scorching hot summer day in July. Avery thinks we are going to my parents best friend’s surprise anniversary party. We both get ready and get in the car to head to what she thinks is an anniversary party. About halfway through the drive  I  get a call from my sister saying we need to stop at my parents house on the way to “grab some supplies for the anniversary party”. A few minutes later we pull up to my parents’ house to find big white marquee letters that say “Marry Me”. I pulled off the surprise of a lifetime. Avery changed in to a white dress that was waiting for her in the guest house before we went in to the engagement party to join over 100 of our closest family and friends in celebrating our surprise engagement! It was a night to remember.

Newly engaged? Just got married? We’d love to hear about your special day!
